Greens back campaign to protect Royal Mail from privatisation

The London Federation of Green Parties [1], the decision-making body representing Greens in London, today announced its support for the Keep the Post Public Coalition, showing its continued commitment to fighting Post Office closures.

London Federation of Green Parties Co-ordinator, Noel Lynch, said:

"We believe the Royal Mail provides a vital public service. We are convinced that the Government's plans to privatise and break up Royal Mail will lead to widespread closures of Post Offices. They will also jeopardise the uniform tariff and universal service for letter and lead to a deterioration of services provided - particularly for small businesses, domestic customers, vulnerable groups and communities.

"As stated in our 2010 manifesto [2], Greens would reopen those Post Offices that misguided Government policy has shut down, and eventually increase their number. We would set aside £1bn per year to subsidise the local Post Office network.

"The London Federation of Green Parties is proud to support the Keep the Post Public Coalition and will continue its campaign to protect this precious public service."
